Tattoo Aftercare Guide

How you care for your tattoo during the first few weeks directly affects how vibrant and crisp the artwork remains.

Immediate Care (Day 1)

Leave the protective bandage or wrap on for the exact amount of time recommended by your artist (typically 2 to 4 hours, or up to 24 hours for special breathable recovery film). Once removed, do not re-bandage the tattoo.

First Wash: Wash the tattoo immediately using your clean hands, warm water, and a mild, fragrance-free liquid soap. Wash away all dried fluids gently. Do not use a washcloth, sponge, or loofah.

Drying: Pat the area dry using a clean, fresh paper towel. Do not rub, and do not use a standard bath towel, which can harbor bacteria.

Healing Guidelines (Weeks 1–3)

  • Moisturizing: Apply a very thin layer of artist-recommended ointment (like Aquaphor) or unscented lotion 2 to 3 times a day. Do not over-apply; the skin needs to breathe.
  • Do Not Scratch or Pick: As the tattoo heals, it will flake, peel, and itch. Picking or scratching scabs can pull the ink out of the skin, causing blank spots.
  • No Swimming or Soaking: Avoid bathtubs, hot tubs, lakes, and pools for at least 2 to 3 weeks until the skin is fully closed. Standard showers are fine.
  • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Keep the healing tattoo out of direct sun. Once healed, always apply high-SPF sunblock to prevent fading.

Signs of Normal Healing

Some mild swelling, redness, and tenderness is normal during the first 2 to 4 days. As the skin heals, it will begin to flake off like a mild sunburn—this is normal. If you have any concerns or questions, text the studio directly.
